Using TimeToast to Create Literary Timelines

Creating a Collaborative Timeline of Major British Writers (18th–20th Century)

This activity demonstrated that digital tools like TimeToast can effectively combine content learning, collaborative work, and metacognitive development. The visual and interactive nature of timelines makes literary history more accessible and engaging for students. I would definitely implement this activity again with minor adjustments to maximize reflection and peer discussion.

1. Learning Objectives

By the end of the activity, students were able to:

  • Identify key British writers from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

  • Recognize the historical context in which major literary works were produced.

  • Extract relevant chronological information from a written text.

  • Work collaboratively using metacognitive strategies:

    • Planning their task

    • Self-regulating during group work

    • Self and co-evaluating their contributions

  • Present information visually in a structured and meaningful way.

2. Description of the Activity

Before introducing the tool to students, I explored the main features of TimeToast (creating events, adding images, organizing dates chronologically, and publishing timelines).

Students were divided into small groups (maximum 3 per group). Each group received a carefully selected text about one major British writer. The texts were adapted to an appropriate level and length to ensure comprehension without overload.

Each group was responsible for one writer:

  • Daniel Defoe

  • Jane Austen

  • Charles Dickens

  • Virginia Woolf

  • George Orwell

Students had to:

  1. Read and highlight key dates and events from the text.

  2. Select the most relevant biographical and literary milestones.

  3. Plan how to organize their information chronologically.

  4. Create their section of the timeline in TimeToast.

  5. Review their work and compare it with another group (co-evaluation).

Each group was responsible for one part of the overall class timeline. This ensured that everyone had a clear responsibility, making group work more motivating and meaningful.

3. Steps Followed to Set Up the Activity

  1. Explored TimeToast features beforehand.

  2. Selected and adapted literary texts of appropriate length and level.

  3. Divided students into balanced groups.

  4. Explained:

    • The objective of the activity

    • The rules (use only the given text as a source)

    • Assessment criteria

  5. Modeled how to create one example event on TimeToast.

  6. Allowed groups to work collaboratively.

  7. Conducted peer review between groups.

  8. Published and shared the final timelines.

4. Advantages of Using TimeToast

  • It visually reinforces chronological understanding.

  • It helps students synthesize information from texts.

  • It encourages digital literacy skills.

  • The visual format increases engagement and motivation.

  • It supports collaborative work in a structured way.

  • It makes abstract literary history more concrete.

5. Problems Encountered & Solutions

Problem 1: Difficulty selecting key information
Some students initially wanted to include too many details.
Solution: We discussed the importance of identifying main milestones rather than minor details.

Problem 2: Technical issues (formatting dates)
Some students were confused about date formatting.
Solution: I demonstrated the correct format and created a quick checklist on the board.

Problem 3: Unequal participation in some groups
Solution: I assigned specific roles:

  • Reader

  • Information selector

  • Timeline editor

This improved self-regulation and accountability.

6. Students’ Reaction

Students responded positively to using TimeToast. They reported that:

  • It was more engaging than writing a traditional summary.

  • The visual layout helped them understand literary progression.

  • They enjoyed working collaboratively.

  • They felt more responsible knowing their section would form part of a larger class project.

Some students mentioned that they found the tool easy to use after the initial explanation.

7. What I Would Improve Next Time

  • Provide a short printed guide with screenshots.

  • Allow slightly more time for peer evaluation.

  • Include a short oral presentation where each group explains their section of the timeline.

  • Possibly compare two writers from the same century for deeper analysis.

8. How TimeToast Helped Achieve Learning Objectives

  1. Improved chronological awareness
Students clearly visualized literary development across centuries.

  2. Enhanced text analysis skills
They had to extract relevant dates and information from written texts.

  3. Strengthened metacognitive strategies

    • Planning what to include

    • Monitoring progress

    • Evaluating their own and peers’ work

  4. Encouraged cooperative learning
Shared responsibility increased motivation and accountability.

  5. Developed digital competence
Students practiced using an online tool for academic purposes.
